Creator: Morris, Nelson

Date: 1944-05

Description:

Caption: Water well in Aruba back country. NOTE: The incessant hope of finding a fresh water supply in Aruba has at times reached ridiculous proportions. Last year, the local Government was convinced by a religious Frere from Venezuela, that a certain fresh water river runs beneath the sea and thrusts upward beneath Aruba. The Frere arrived with a divining rod and spent several days exploring the island with his contraptions, and finally settled on a spot across the street from the huge Catholic church in Oranjestad. Extensive drilling operations were begun and when they were well past the 1000 meter mark without finding any trace of fresh water, the venture was given up for lost rather than drill any further.
