Dit kunukuhuis in het voormalige visserdorp Rancho werd in 1902-1903 gebouwd door Emiterio Orman. Het interieur heeft nog veel oorspronkelijke onderdelen. De houten scheidingswand tussen ‘cambro’ en ‘sala’ reikt niet tot de zoldering. De dakstoel is in het zicht gelaten. Bij de keuken staat nog een grote ‘djar voor het drinkwater. Zowel Emiterio als zijn zoon Eroterio, de befaamde Arubaanse voetballer ‘Boes' Orman, waren als visser werkzaam. De vissersboot op het erf is het schip waarmee gevaren werd.

This typical Aruban cottage in the former fishing village of Rancho was built by Emiterio Orman in 19021903. The interior still features many original parts. The wooden partition wall between the ‘cambro’ (bedroom) and ‘sala’ (livingroom) does not reach the ceiling. The roof-truss was kept visible. Near the kitchen there is still a huge ‘urn’ with drinking water. Emiterio as well his son Eroterio, the well-known Aruban football player ‘Boes’ Orman, were fishermen. The fishing boat sitting in the yard is the very ship they used to sail the seas with.

This old style country cottage was built in 1927 by the farmer Domenico Figaroa. As was the custom in those days, this dwelling was also built in phases. First the southern gallery and kitchen were built. Later, after having saved some more money, one continued with the construction of the living room and bedroom. The house was blessed by the Priest. Originally white beach sand was poured on the bare floor and once a year it was replaced by fresh sand. There were eight

Dit kunukuhuis onder schilddak is omstreeks 1922 door Chico Geerman gebouwd, maar het moet later zijn vernieuwd. Waarschijnlijk omstreeks 1940. Het huis staat aan de doorgangsroute naar Mira la Mar. Deze weg ontstond omstreeks 1824 toen men dit gebied voor de goudwinning in ontwikkeling bracht. Goudzoekers kwamen uit alle hoeken van Europa. Enkelen hebben zich blijvend gevestigd. Soms vindt men nog goud. Een oude traditie is het smelten van trouwringen uit Arubaans goud.

This old Aruban style cottage under hipped roof was built by Chico Geerman in 1922, but it must have been renovated later on. Probably around 1940. The house is situated at the passage way to Mira La Mar. This road came about around 1824 when this area was developed for gold mining. Gold diggers came from all corners of Europe. A few have settled here permanently. Sometimes gold is still found. It is an old tradition to melt wedding bands from Aruban gold.

This ‘cas decora’ or ‘ornamented house’ of 1929 still
features an enclosure erected of ‘piedra di mondi’ or
stones found in the woods. The central part of the
house has a saddleback roof covered with tiles. The
two nozzle facades show a crown in the form of an
apple with its stalk cut in two. In the top of the fagade
there is a cartouche with the year 1929 engraved in it. The colors of the house are traditional: yellow-ochre, brown, green and white. The sheep’s fold together with the cool and shaded patio and the detached shack with its built-in working table made of poured concrete, are reminiscent of the originally partly agricultural

In verband met de afvoer van rook bevindt de keuken van een kunukuhuis zich altijd aan de westzijde. De fogón van dit ‘cas decora’ uit omstreeks 1931 heeft hier het kenmerkende blokvormige onderstuk waarop een schuin naar boven toelopende boezem is geplaatst met een vierkante schoorsteen met huif. Alle deur- en vensteropeningen van dit woonhuis zijn aan de bovenzijde voorzien van een geprofileerde waterlijst. De noordgevel is verder geaccentueerd door een gordijnfries en gepleisterde hoeklisenen met decoraties in bas-reliëf.

Because of the smoke-exhaust the kitchen of an Aruban cunucu-cottage is always on the west side. The chimney of this typical ‘cas decora’ of 1931, shows the typical square bottom-piece whereupon a sloped reservoir in ascending line and a square chimney with hood are placed. All door and window openings of this cottage have a profiled window-drip at the upper side. In addition, the north facade is accentuated by a curtaining frieze and corner pilaster strips with decorations in low relief as well.

Dit kunukuhuis onder schilddak werd in 1928 door Mathilde Christiaans gebouwd. Tegenwoordig verft men de huizen soms in zeer felle kleuren. De oorspronkelijke Arubaanse kleuren waren echter door gebruik van witkalk zachter van toon. Aan de witkalk werden pigmenten als gele oker of bruinrode ijzeroxide toegevoegd. In de 19de eeuw verbood het Gouvernement op Curagao het witsauzen van huizen. Door de weerkaatsing van het felle zonlicht op de witte muren zou men oogletsel kunnen oplopen.

This old style Aruban cottage under hipped roof was built by Mathilde Christiaans in 1928. Nowadays very bright colors are used to paint the houses with. The original Aruban colors were softer through the use of limestone. Pigmentation like yellow ochre and brown reddish iron oxide was added. In the 19th century the Government in Curacao prohibited the whitewashing of houses. The reflection of the bright sunlight on the white walls might cause damage to the eyes.

Dit fraaie kunukuhuis is vóór 1928 door Juan de Cuba gebouwd. Het staat op een groot stuk landbouwgrond voor mais, bonen en pinda's. Ook hield men vee. De nok en de knik van het pannendak zijn ingebed in een lijst van witte kalkpleister. Deze moest inwateren voorkomen. Ook de onderzijde van de pannen bestreek men daarom meestal met witkalk. De oranje pannendaken met witte lijsten zijn beeldmerken in het Arubaanse landschap geworden.

This beautiful country cottage was built by Juan de Cuba in 1928. It was erected on a large plot of land used for planting corn, peas and peanuts. There was also livestock. The ridge and curve of the tiled roof are embedded in a frame of white limestone. The orange tiled roofs with its white frames have become a picture trade mark in the Aruban landscape.

het waterleidingnet aangesloten. Ook bleken zinken 31 1 2 3 4. 5 6 golfplaten duurzamer en weersbestendiger. Het dakype kwam ook in Venezuela voor.

Nico Ras chose this hilly terrain to build his cottage under hipped roof around 1930. The central part and ADVOCATEN / LAWYERS the north gallery are constructed of poured concrete; the south gallery is of a later date and possibly erected from concrete blocks. At the east and south sides you can still find the ruins of a terrace, going fully around the house, a so called ‘stupi’. The north front features a

Dit kunukuhuis in de traditioneel-ambachtelijke stijl van het type ‘cas decora-cas floria’ werd rond 1945 gebouwd. Het bestaat uit een kern onder golfplaten schilddak met eenvoudige pirons. De drie in het zicht staande gevels hebben onder de geprofileerde gootlijst nog een gordijnfries. Op de hoeken van de zuidgevel bevindt zich een decoratieve liseen. Hierin zien wij verdiepte en opliggende velden, afwisselend bruin- en crèmekleurig. Als decoratie laten zich stervormen, ruitvormen en een zogenaamde ‘vogelkooi’ herkennen.

This country-style cottage in the traditional-industrial style of the ‘cas decora’ or ‘cas floria’ category, was built around 1945. It is erected of a central part under corrugated iron plate hipped roof with simple pinions. The three perceptible facades under the profiled cornice still have a curtaining frieze. At the corners of the south facade you can find a decorative pilaster strip. This shows sunken and protruding parts, alternatively brown and cream colored. The typical star and diamond shapes and also the so called ‘bird cage’ are distinguished in the decoration.

Pastoor Hendrikstraat 110/112
Dit houten woonhuis is zeldzaam. Het heeft drie galerijen en staat op neuten. De architectuur is niet specifiek Arubaans, maar Caribisch. Het is door LAGOarbeiders van de omringende eilanden geintroduceerd. Al in de 17de eeuw importeerde men hout uit Noord-Amerika naar het Caribische gebied. De planken liet men door de houtvester op maat zagen en als bouwpakket aanleveren. Men kon het pakket eenvoudig in elkaar zetten, maar ook uit elkaar halen en meenemen wanneer men verhuisde.

This wooden cottage is unique in its kind. It features three galleries and it is built on beams. The architecture is not specifically Aruban, but more Caribbean. It was introduced by the LAGO employees from the neighboring islands. From the 17th century on wood was imported from the United Stated of North America to the Caribbean. The forester was asked to cut the wood in sizes and to send it up as a building kit. This made assembling easy, but also disassembling so one could take it along when moving to another location.

Zenon Croes bouwde dit huis in de twintiger jaren nabij de kust. Een hoge trap aan de achterzijde overbrugt het niveauverschil tussen erf en zee. De gevels zijn gepleisterd en zalmkleurig geschilderd. Deze zalmkleur werd verkregen door witkalk te mengen met een roodbruin ijzeroxide. Het kan gerekend worden tot het traditioneel Arubaans kleurpalet. De gootlijst volgt de opgaande lijn van de galerijen en loopt horizontaal over de kopse gevel verder. De galerijen worden hiermee visueel verbonden er er ontstaat een kleine geveltop met een louvreblok ter ventilatie van de kap.

Zenon Croes built this cottage on the rocks by the sea in the nineteen twenties. A large stepladder at the back of the house is placed to level out the difference between the yard and the sea. The facades are plastered and painted a salmon pink. This salmon hue was obtained by mixing white-wash with a reddish brown iron oxide pigment. It may be considered part of the traditional Aruban color-scheme. The eaves fascia follows the ascending line of the galleries and continues in a horizontal fashion over the bonder facade. The galleries are visually linked herewith and a small peak with a louver block is used for ventilation of the roof.
