Caha di Orgel: Tone of Our Tradition

On Thanksgiving day, UNOCA, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, organized an exhibition of the Caha di Orgel: “Tone of Our Tradition,” which took place at the UNOCA hall. The Minister of Culture, Xiomara Maduro, opened the exhibition and emphasized that the event was meant to honor the unique musical heritage of Aruba’s folklore, the Caha di Orgel. The Minister of Culture stated that this exhibition is meant to celebrate our music, our traditions, and our cultural identity. Music is a pillar of our culture. From neighborhood festivals to family ceremonies, music is the universal language that unites our people.
The Caha di Orgel is more than just an instrument; it is a symbol of nostalgia, joy, and unity. The rhythm of the Caha di Orgel is a reminder of the joy of life and the traditions of our people. It brings to mind the memories of our ancestors and reflects the importance of our musical history.

One of the reasons why a multicultural society like the one we have in Aruba can exist is because of our language Papiamento. Our language is the means by which our culture and traditions are passed down from one generation to the next.

In this exhibition both the visual and verbal art are used to express the richness of our language Papiamento, and they showcase the creativity of our students. It is language expressed in a visual manner to convey our history, knowledge and a little bit of humor, ensuring its longevity. The artwork enhances the profoundness of our sayings, proverbs and expressions.

Our language, Papiamento, encompasses a variety of sayings and proverbs. It is an integral part of our cultural heritage, serving as the means through which we connect with the past while keeping our sights set on the future.

The exhibition “Visualizing Sayings, Proverbs and Expressions” is a project of UNOCA Aruba together with the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education, the Fundacion Lanta Papiamento, and UNESCO Aruba.

Database of enslaved people on Aruba 1840-1863

Enslaved people were only registered with a first name. They received a last name when they were freed. This happened when slavery was abolished on Aruba and in the other Dutch colonies on July 1st, 1863 (emancipation), or in the case of manumission, before this date.
